# Google Hotel Ads for hotels, how they work, what they cost and how to start in 2026

> Google Hotel Ads for hotels: how the auction works, what bidding costs, free booking links and the 2026 EU changes.

By Amber Doyon, web writer at [Hikoo](https://www.tryhikoo.com/en/?utm_source=hotelsoftwarecompared.com&utm_medium=google-hotel-ads-for-hotels). Updated 2026-11-04. Hotel Software Compared, https://hotelsoftwarecompared.com/en/google-hotel-ads-for-hotels

## Key takeaways

- Google Hotel Ads are paid booking links in the hotel results on Search, Maps and YouTube. Google's bidding overview lists four strategies (target ROAS, enhanced CPC, CPC and CPC%), and the commission strategies ended in October 2024. Google publishes no average price per click.
- HOTREC's 2026 survey found 58% of European hotels with a permanent metasearch connection in 2025, and 83% of those hotels used Google Hotel Ads, ahead of Tripadvisor (39%), Trivago (35%) and Kayak (10%).
- Free booking links cost nothing and cannot be bought. Any property with a bid in a hotel campaign, available rates and a landing page is eligible, and the price accuracy score affects both ad cost and free placement.
- Google's help page says its third-party rates feature for hotel ads is unavailable after September 30, 2026. A hotel now needs its own price feed, usually through its channel manager or booking engine.
- On July 23, 2026, the European Commission fined Google €460 million for favoring its own services in Search, hotels included. Google says free direct booking clicks fell by as much as 30% after its first EU changes.

Google Hotel Ads are paid booking links in the hotel results on Google Search, Maps and YouTube. You send Google your rates through a channel manager or booking engine, set a bid, and Google runs an auction for each stay a traveler searches. Free booking links sit beside the ads and cost nothing.

## What are Google Hotel Ads and where do they appear?

Google Hotel Ads are the paid links that appear when a traveler looks for a hotel on Google. Google says hotel campaigns let you bid for ads "that appear when a traveler searches for a hotel on Search or Maps", inside a booking module that can show photos, amenities, prices and a link to book ([Google Ads Help, About hotel campaigns](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/9238461?hl=en)). The same page lists YouTube among the places where travelers find the hotel search module.

On a hotel's detail page, paid links carry an "Ads" badge and free links are listed under "All options". In the results list, the price shown for a property is the lowest price offered across all partners ([Google Ads Help, How travelers find hotel booking links](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/9238462?hl=en)). Your direct rate therefore sits in the same module as Booking.com, Expedia and every other seller of your rooms.

## What do you need to run Google Hotel Ads?

You need a hotel list, current prices for each itinerary and landing pages where guests can book. Google manages all three in a Hotel Center account, which you link to Google Ads to run campaigns and set budgets ([Google Ads Help, About hotel campaigns](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/9238461?hl=en)). Most hotels never touch the feed themselves, because their booking engine or channel manager sends it.

1. Ask your booking engine or channel manager whether your property already reaches Google. Google notes that a hotel using a reservation system may already be connected through its provider, which can set up the booking links ([Google Hotel Center Help, free booking links](https://support.google.com/hotelprices/answer/10472393?hl=en)). Our [hotel booking engine comparison](/en/best-hotel-booking-engine) and [channel manager comparison](/en/best-hotel-channel-manager) show which tools offer the connection.
2. Open a Hotel Center account through that partner, or through an integration partner Google can help you find.
3. Send rates that match the exact itinerary. If a traveler searches three nights from July 14, Google only considers rates submitted for those three nights, and for a given itinerary only one central reservation system is eligible to show its ads ([Google Ads Help, Bidding overview for hotel ads](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/9244120?hl=en)).
4. Link Hotel Center to Google Ads, create a hotel campaign, then set a budget and a bid strategy.
5. Open the price accuracy report and fix any mismatch between your feed and your booking page.

### Why did hotels lose Google's third-party rates on September 30, 2026?

Google's help page says the third-party rates feature for hotel ads is unavailable after September 30, 2026. Campaigns that relied on Google-sourced rates stop serving across all Hotel Ads inventory, including the booking module. To keep showing hotel ads, a hotel must set up a direct price feed through an integration partner or a Hotel Center account, link it to Google Ads and recreate its campaigns with similar bids and budgets ([Google Hotel Center Help, third-party rates](https://support.google.com/hotelprices/answer/14310302?hl=en)). Performance Max for travel goals campaigns keep running on Search, Display and YouTube without action.

## How much do Google Hotel Ads cost?

Google publishes no average price per click or per booking, so your cost depends on your bids, your rates and your conversion rate. What Google does publish is the list of ways you can pay.

### Which bid strategies does Google offer for hotel ads?

Google's bidding overview lists four strategies for hotel campaigns, and all four charge by the click. Target ROAS and enhanced CPC optimize for conversion value, and target ROAS sets a bid for each auction from signals such as device, location, browser, check-in date and time of day. Manual CPC and CPC%, which bids a percentage of the nightly room price, are labelled "not recommended to use alone". The two automated strategies need conversion tracking with the full booking amount as the purchase value, and Google advises letting a first Smart Bidding test run for at least two weeks before judging it. You can adjust bids by device, traveler location, length of stay, check-in day, booking window and audience list ([Google Ads Help, Bidding overview for hotel ads](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/9244120?hl=en)).

![Google Ads Help table of hotel bid strategies, with target ROAS, enhanced CPC, CPC and CPC%](https://hotelsoftwarecompared.com/images/google-hotel-ads/google-ads-hotel-bidding-overview.webp "The four bid strategies in Google's bidding overview for hotel ads. Source: Google Ads Help, page consulted on 2026-11-04")

Pay-per-stay is gone. Google announced on February 6, 2024 that it would sunset both commission strategies, no longer accepting new allowlist requests for per-stay from February 2024, removing both from Google Ads on April 30, 2024 and ending campaigns that used them on October 31, 2024. It pointed hotels to target ROAS instead ([Google Ads Help, February 6, 2024](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/14556671)). One loose end: Google's "About hotel campaigns" page still lists the two commission options, so rely on the bidding overview and the 2024 announcement.

### A worked example with assumed figures

Say an independent hotel earns €380 on an average direct booking, assumes 3% of clicks turn into a booking and accepts spending 12% of booking value to win it. The most it should bid per click is €380 × 3% × 12% = €1.37. The same 12% cost share equals a target ROAS of about 8.3: a €380 booking against €45.60 of ad cost.

These are invented inputs, not benchmarks, and your conversion rate will differ. Clicks cost money whether or not the guest later cancels, so compare cost per completed stay rather than cost per booking. As a yardstick for the alternative, Expedia Group booked $3,429 million of lodging revenue on $24,603 million of lodging gross bookings in the second quarter of 2026, a ratio of 13.9% that mixes merchant and agency models and is not a commission rate (calculation from [Expedia Group, exhibit 99.1](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1324424/000132442426000051/earningsrelease-q22026.htm)). Booking.com does not publish an equivalent single rate: it says the exact percentage depends on your country, property type and accommodation agreement ([Booking.com partner help](https://partner.booking.com/en-gb/help/commission-invoices-tax/commission/understanding-our-commission)).

## Are Google free booking links really free?

Yes. Google states that "hotel partners pay no fee for free booking links, and Google doesn't collect any payment for placement or user engagement with these links". They differ from ads because they are ranked by utility to the user, not by an auction ([Google Hotel Center Help, About hotel free booking links](https://support.google.com/hotelprices/answer/10472393?hl=en)).

An existing Hotel Center partner taking part in Hotel Ads is automatically eligible, and any property with a bid in a hotel campaign, available rates and a landing page qualifies. Ranking uses consumer preference, the value offered, landing page experience and the historical accuracy of your prices. Bids have no effect on it, and no one can pay for a higher position. Google may show a free link beside your ad, so the same hotel can appear twice in one impression, and it tests the placement of free links against paid ones.

![Google Hotel Center Help page on free booking links, eligibility and ranking](https://hotelsoftwarecompared.com/images/google-hotel-ads/google-hotel-center-free-booking-links.webp "Eligibility and ranking rules for free booking links. Source: Google Hotel Center Help, page consulted on 2026-11-04")

You can read free booking link performance in the Reports section of Hotel Center, and add a landing page variable to tell clicks from an ad and from a free link in your own analytics.

## How does price accuracy affect your ranking and your cost?

Google compares the price it shows with the price on your booking page, and the score it computes feeds both your ad auction and your free placement. The total on the booking page must be prominently displayed, match Google's total, cover an overnight stay and disclose all mandatory taxes and fees without extra steps ([Google Hotel Center Help, Price Accuracy Policy](https://support.google.com/hotelprices/answer/6064419?hl=en)). Scores run from Excellent to Failed. Excellent gives your ads and free links preference in positioning. Fair and Poor hurt your auction position, your advertising cost and your free placement. At Risk switches off most of your ads and free links, and Failed switches them all off. Google also says an ad's quality depends on price accuracy and on how well it answers the traveler's need ([Google Ads Help, About hotel campaigns](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/9238461?hl=en)). A rate feed that drifts from your booking engine is the cheapest way to lose visibility.

## How many hotels use Google Hotel Ads?

In HOTREC's European Hotel Distribution Study 2026, based on unweighted survey data for these questions, 58% of European hotels had a permanent metasearch interface through their own booking system in 2025, 25% said metasearch was of no interest and 17% did not know the option existed. Among the hotels using metasearch, 83% used Google Hotel Ads, 39% Tripadvisor, 35% Trivago and 10% Kayak ([HOTREC 2026, pages 140 and 143](https://www.hotrec.eu/media/static/files/import/all_news_2026_2026_35/full-study_european-hotel-distribution-study-2026_hotrec.pdf)). HOTREC's executive summary calls Google Hotel Ads the dominant metasearch platform. The study rests on 2,713 hotels ([HOTREC, September 15, 2026](https://www.hotrec.eu/en/news_booking-holdings-and-expedia-group-account-for-85-of-europe_E2_80_99s-ota-market-hotrec-study-finds.html)). HOTREC found the connection over-represented in 4-star, urban, chain and larger hotels, and under-represented in hotels under 30 rooms, 2- and 3-star hotels, independents and rural properties (same study, page 141).

![HOTREC chart of metasearch engines used by European hotels from 2013 to 2025, with Google Hotel Ads at 83%](https://hotelsoftwarecompared.com/images/google-hotel-ads/hotrec-metasearch-engines-used-2025.webp "Metasearch engines used by European hotels, 2013 to 2025. Source: HOTREC and HES-SO Valais-Wallis, European Hotel Distribution Study 2026, page 143, consulted on 2026-11-04")

That matters in France, where Insee counts 11,253 independent hotels out of 14,886 in 2025, or 75.6% (calculation from [Insee](https://www.insee.fr/fr/statistiques/2015412)). We found no France-only metasearch figure in the study.

## What did the Digital Markets Act change for Google Hotel Ads in Europe?

Google says the Digital Markets Act required it to redesign its hotel results in Europe, and in July 2026 the Commission found that Google still favors its own services. Hotels there should treat their Google traffic as unstable and track it by source.

On November 26, 2024, Google said it had made more than 20 modifications to Google Search to comply, including dedicated units that give comparison sites more prominence for hotels. It added that airlines, hotel operators and small retailers reported that "free direct booking clicks are down as much as 30%" since its first changes, and announced a test in Germany, Belgium and Estonia that removed the hotel map and results in favor of plain links ([Google, November 26, 2024](https://blog.google/around-the-globe/google-europe/dma-compliance-update/)). That 30% is Google's figure, from a party to the dispute. On July 23, 2026, the European Commission took two decisions against Google. It found that Google gives preferential treatment to its own services, including shopping, hotels, transport and sports results, fined it €460 million for that self-preferencing and €430 million for Google Play steering, and ordered it to end the non-compliance ([European Commission, July 23, 2026](https://digital-markets-act.ec.europa.eu/commission-fines-google-eur890-million-breaches-digital-markets-act-2026-07-23_en)). We found no final description of the hotel layout Google will keep in Europe.

## Why does Google matter to the OTAs you compete with?

The OTAs buy the same Google clicks you do. Booking Holdings reports that its performance marketing is "primarily related to the use of online search engines (primarily Google), affiliate marketing, meta-search, and social media", and that total performance and brand marketing came to $8.2 billion in 2025, up 12.5% ([Booking Holdings, 10-K for 2025](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1075531/000107553126000009/bkng-20251231.htm)). In the third quarter of 2026, its marketing expenses were $2,588 million, or 4.8% of $54.5 billion in gross bookings, the ratio Booking Holdings publishes ([Booking Holdings, November 3, 2026](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1075531/000107553126000044/q3-26bkngearningsrelease.htm)).

Expedia Group tells investors that a significant portion of its traffic comes from search engines such as Google through keyword purchases and organic search, and that Google "has used its search market position to promote its own travel services" ([Expedia Group, 10-K for 2025](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1324424/000132442426000008/expe-20251231.htm)).

The direct click is worth winning. SiteMinder, a vendor that sells metasearch advertising, reports an average of $516 per hotel-website booking in 2025 against $312 for OTAs, a gap of 65.4% (calculation from [SiteMinder](https://www.siteminder.com/hotel-booking-trends/)). Our [direct booking statistics](/en/hotel-direct-booking-statistics) show how that direct share compares with the OTA share across Europe.

## Should a small independent hotel start with paid ads or free links?

Start with free links, then add paid bids once tracking works and you know your cost per completed stay. Free links carry no click fees, and they depend on the same rate feed as ads, so they test your setup at no cost.

1. Confirm in Hotel Center, or with your provider, that your rates reach Google and that your price accuracy score is not Fair or worse.
2. Add conversion tracking with the full booking value before you pay for a single click.
3. Compute your ceiling bid with the formula above, from your own average booking value and conversion rate.
4. Start with a small capped budget on your best-converting dates, and let a first automated test run for two weeks before you change it.
5. Compare paid and free clicks separately in your analytics, using the landing page variable Google provides.

Your direct price also needs to be competitive. Our guide to [ADR and its benchmarks](/en/hotel-adr-average-daily-rate) and our [RevPAR guide](/en/revpar) help you check what rate you can defend against the OTA offers on the same screen.

## What changes with Google AI Mode?

Independent hotels are not on the partner list for now. Google began rolling out hotel booking in AI Mode in the United States, in English, on August 27, 2026, with ten partners: Booking.com, Choice Hotels International, Expedia, Hilton, Hotels.com, IHG Hotels & Resorts, Marriott International, Priceline, Trip.com and Wyndham Hotels & Resorts. The hotel or booking platform acts as merchant of record and handles customer service ([Google, August 27, 2026](https://blog.google/products-and-platforms/products/search/book-travel-ai-mode/)).

## Where should you start?

Ask your booking engine or channel manager one question this week: is my property live in Hotel Center, and what is my price accuracy score? If the answer is yes, check your free booking links in the Reports section before you spend on ads. If it is no, compare the two tools in our [booking engine guide](/en/best-hotel-booking-engine) on their Google connection first.

## Frequently asked questions

### What are Google Hotel Ads?

Google Hotel Ads are paid booking links shown in the hotel results on Google Search, Maps and YouTube. They carry an "Ads" badge and show your rate, your website name and a link to book. Google ranks them with an auction that weighs your bid and the accuracy of your prices.

### How much do Google Hotel Ads cost?

Google does not publish an average price. You pay per click under one of four bid strategies, and your own cost depends on your bids, your rates and how often a click turns into a booking. Google ended its commission-based strategies in October 2024, so the bidding overview's list of strategies has no pay-per-stay option left.

### Are Google free booking links really free?

Yes. Google states that hotel partners pay no fee for free booking links and that it collects no payment for placement or user engagement. You cannot pay for a higher rank either. The cost sits elsewhere, in the price feed and the booking engine that supply your rates.

### Do I need a Hotel Center account to appear on Google?

Not directly. If your reservation system is already connected to Google, your provider can set up your booking links. A hotel that wants to run its own campaigns needs a Hotel Center account linked to Google Ads, which most hotels open through an integration partner.

### Can an independent hotel run Google Hotel Ads without an agency?

Yes, if its booking engine or channel manager sends rates to Google and the hotel links a Hotel Center account to Google Ads. The harder part is the budget and the tracking. Set a cost ceiling per stay before you switch bids on, and let a first automated test run for two weeks before you judge it.

### Does Google Hotel Ads work in Google AI Mode?

Not for most hotels yet. When Google began rolling out hotel booking in AI Mode in the United States on August 27, 2026, it named ten partners, all hotel chains or online travel companies. Independent hotels are not on that list.
